Animal Biosecurity at Fairs and Shows Educational Program Outline

Objectives

After a short educational program, teenage livestock and poultry showmen will:

  • Know that zoonotic diseases are those spread between animals and humans
  • Practice KARE
    • Keep things clean. Clean pens, buckets, feed pans, shovels, halters, brushes, trailers and other equipment.
    • Avoid bringing disease home. Before going home, change clothes and store them in a tub or plastic bag. Wash clothes in hot soapy water, and scrub with soap then disinfect footwear. Quarantine animals when they’re brought home. Clean and disinfect trailer and equipment used at show.
    • Resist borrowing disease. Don’t borrow equipment from other exhibitors or loan yours.
    • Educate yourself on signs of disease. Note animals that look ill or out of the ordinary, and report them to an adult.
  • Wash hands with soap and water after touching animals or visiting an animal area.
  • Keep food and drink out of animal areas, and wash hands before eating or drinking.
  • Educate visitors about how they take care of your animals.

Prepare

  • Review this outline, the video and additional resources.
  • Take paper and pencils if students will be asked to draft their mini biosecurity plans.
  • Copy any take-home materials.
  • Set up a way to show the video.
  • Organize the room to encourage discussion.

Outline

  1. Ask students what “animal biosecurity” means. It’s doing things that help prevent animals from getting sick – and prevent people getting sick from animals.
  2. Ask what they now do to practice animal biosecurity. Examples may include scoop manure from pens and provide fresh bedding, wash brushes, change clothes before going home from the fair, etc.
  3. Show the 6:49 video Animal Biosecurity at Fairs and Shows.
  4. Discuss what they learned from the video to practice KARE: keep things clean, avoid bringing disease home, resist borrowing disease and educate yourself on signs of disease.
  5. Discuss what they’ll do to practice animal biosecurity before, during and after fairs and shows. Possibly have students write mini biosecurity plans that they commit to.
