A little help from my eXtension friends

Need some help? Think eXtension.

The eXtension effort can be beneficial for county, area and state educators alike.  Here are just a few brief examples that I learned about from colleagues here and at the recent National eXtension conference.

  • Weekly news articles – If you need a topic for a weekly news article, take a look at the News link on the www.extension.org home page.  You can easily see recent news items that might fit the particular need in your county or specialty area by looking at all the most recent articles tagged with keywords that fit your specific geographical or topic area.  For example, if you have some dairy interests, enter the word dairy into the search box and it will show all the recent news items tagged with the word dairy.
  • Social media – An exciting way to make contact with people in the state.  If you want to see social media in action, you simply need to look at the Ward County Facebook page providing flood information: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/WardCountyExtension
  • Ask an Expert (AaE) on Web pages – As educators it is important to show that our efforts are having some impact, while visits to websites are not always indicative of transformational education, it still can be at least one piece of the puzzle. By participating in the Ask and Expert system you can interact as well as directly see what information the people in your area are currently seeking. Here is an example;  eXtension has a Google Analytics account that allows you to see a variety of statistics about eXtension pages.  I checked the Google Analytics while out of state for the Home Energy AaE pages that I work with and noticed a very strong spike of views of an FAQ (Frequently Answered Question) I answered a few years ago on replacing wet fiberglass insulation.  Obviously there is a need and people are seeking that information.  By knowing this, I was able to provide timely additional information that people are already seeking in a news release last week.

I wanted to send out this quick note about a few things concerning the benefits that I have gained by participating in eXtension that will hopefully be translated into better information and programming for the people I serve in our state.

If you have any questions about working with eXtension please let me or any of the other NDSU eXtension institutional team members.
