Safe TALK

Safe TALK is a 3-hour alertness workshop that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. Safe TALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.
This training is on a first come-first serve basis with a minimum of 10 people and maximum of 30 people. Cost is $25.00. Register through Marketplace at https://tinyurl.com/y7xq7slq

Big Iron

The NDSU Extension Service has an exhibit area (3 or 4 tables) in the Hartl Ag Building at Big Iron on September 11-12-13, 2018 (Tuesday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Wednesday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Thursday: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm). This as an excellent opportunity to represent NDSU, provide education to the people of North Dakota, and gather input from farmers and agribusiness.

The Big Iron Farm Show is the largest farm show in the upper Midwest with 900+ exhibit booths, training sessions, demonstrations and countless opportunities to connect with peers. Companies display their most innovative agricultural equipment and technology. Some 70,000 farmers, ranchers and agricultural enthusiasts from around the world come to the Red River Valley to experience first-hand our diversified agricultural practices. Big Iron is a leader in providing producers the opportunity to visit with specialists from many ag-related fields, and to participate in seminars and in-field demonstrations to learn about the latest cutting-edge agricultural products, equipment, technology and services. The complete schedule is on the web at http://bigironfarmshow.com/

FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS

Alternative Grain Storage Options

What are the options for alternative grain storage? Ken Hellevang, NDSU Extension Service Agricultural Engineer will describe the fundamentals of successfully storing grain in grain bags and in properly prepared and managed covered piles. He will also focus on important safety practices associated with temporary grain storage.

Industry representatives will show and describe options for modular bunker walls, aeration fans, wireless fan control system, wireless temperature probes, and pile or bunker covers or tarps. Industry representatives will also show and describe grain bags and the equipment to fill and unload the bags. There will be time to examine the equipment and interact with industry representatives.

Effects of Tile Drainage

How does tile drainage effect the physical and chemical properties of soil? The Big Iron Demonstration Field was tiled in 2012. Now, five years later, come to the Demonstration Field each afternoon during the 2017 Big Iron Show to see the impacts “close up”. Soil pits will be dug to expose the tile drain pipes, and areas between tiles, to compare the effects of tile drainage on soils. NDSU Extension engineering, agronomy and soil specialists will be on hand to discuss the impacts of tile drainage on soils and crop production.
