Research Experience

Post-Doctoral Research Associate:  The influence of length of supra-supplementation of selenium to finishing lambs on circulating blood selenium, tissue selenium, and performance is being evaluated as well as the selenium status of grazing Bison on tribal lands.  The influence of level of inclusion of dried distillers grains on feedlot lamb performance, the influence of dormant season grazing on western ND rangelands, the affects of multi-species grazing on leafy spurge infested rangelands, and minimal management sheep production practices are being evaluated.  Trials evaluating the influence of frequency of protein supplementation on lamb N balance, ewe performance, and cow performance as well as calf backgrounding trials evaluating alternative forages or being conducted.

Graduate Research Assistant:  The influence of frequency of protein supplementation on forage intake, individual variation in supplement intake, grazing time, distance traveled, livestock distribution, and performance indices were evaluated on cows grazing low-quality forages.  Intake, in situ digestibility, ruminal fermentation and digesta kinetics as influenced by protein supplementation were evaluated.   The influence of protein supplementation on intake, N balance, and blood urea nitrogen was evaluated using lambs fed low-quality hay.  In situ degradability kinetics of forage kochia, as influenced by calendar date, was evaluated in steers consuming low quality forage.  The influence of seed-bed preparation method and seeding techniques were evaluated for the establishment of forage kochia on dry-land crested wheatgrass stands.  The influence of ruminal incubation on germination of forage kochia seed was evaluated.  Assistance in the evaluation of perennial ryegrass straw as a forage for ruminants was provided.

Graduate Research Assistant:  Supplement intake, in vitro digestibility, average daily gain, and feed efficiency, as influenced by self-limiting supplements (including Salt, Dietary Cation Anion Difference, and CaOH) in free ranging steers were evaluated.  Fecal Near Infrared Spectroscopy and its correlation between forage crude protein and organic matter digestibility of free ranging steers and heifers was also investigated.  Other duties included assisting with various ongoing research projects in the following areas:  multi-species leafy spurge grazing trials, electronic headgates for cattle, growing and finishing cattle trials, calf supplementation, impedance testing in feedlot cattle, and ovariectomization, oocyte collection, and laproscopy for artificial insemination in sheep.

Undergraduate Research Assistant:  Evaluation of digestion coefficients for incremental levels of wet corn gluten feed in finishing steer diets.  Duties included:  ruminal, duodenal, and ileal sample collection, fiber analysis, VFA preparation, statistical analysis, and data summarized.
