The Extension Connection

By Megan Vig

Project Safe Send helps North Dakotans legally dispose of unusable pesticides.  This program is safe, simple and free.  More than 9,800 people have brought in over 4.4 million pounds of pesticides since the program started in 1992.

The program accepts any pesticides (i.e., herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides and fungicides) that are old, unusable or banned.  Fertilizers, surfactants, adjuvants, pesticide rinsate, empty containers, or containers of paint or oil are NOT accepted at the Project Safe Send collection sites.  The program is open to farmers, ranchers, pesticide dealers and applicators, government agencies, homeowners and the general public.  The collected pesticides are carefully packed and shipped out of state for incineration.  Project Safe Send is funded through the fees paid by pesticide manufacturers to register their products in North Dakota.

To prepare for Project Safe Send, check all storage areas for any unusable pesticides and set them aside for Project Safe Send.  In the meantime, keep pesticides locked up safely.  If the containers are deteriorating or leaking, pack them in larger containers and add absorbent materials.  Free heavy-duty plastic bags are available from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

Preregistration is required if bringing more than 1,000 pounds.  A maximum of 20,000 pounds of pesticide per participant will be accepted.  To obtain heavy-duty plastic bags or for more information, please contact ND Department of Agriculture at 1-800-242-7535 or 1-701-328-2231.  Please check www.nd.gov/ndda for updates before heading to a collection site.

Twelve collection sites have been scheduled for this year.  The three remaining northeast North Dakota locations are Devils Lake, Adams, and Larimore.  Devils Lake is scheduled for Wednesday, July 25th, 1905 Schwan Ave NW; Adams is scheduled for Thursday, July 26th, 804 1st Ave; and Larimore is scheduled for Friday, July 27th, 1524 Towner Ave.  Collection times are 8 am to noon and are located at the ND Dept. of Transportation facilities.
