July 13

The Extension Connection

By Megan Vig

It is a busy week at the Extension Office, it’s fair week!  Be sure to check out the exhibits this Friday and Saturday.  The 4-H youth have been working hard on their projects and invite you to take a look at all their hard work.

So far we have held dog rally trial, the horse show, and exhibit interviews.  Thursday afternoon, July 12th at 3 pm, we will have the poultry, rabbit, goat, sheep and baby beef show.  The baby beef show is something new this year and is geared towards those younger aged exhibitors with a calf born in 2018.  The judge will take the time to place the class but also interact with the young youth on what to look for in an animal, give tips on exhibiting the animals, and ask the youth questions about their beef projects.

Friday, July 13th at 9:00 am we will have the swine, dairy and beef shows.  The beef show is the premier event of Griggs County Achievement Days.  Last year we had an excellent showing of many quality animals.  Following the three morning shows, we will have the round robin showmanship contest.  The senior age (15 to 18 years old) showmanship winners of beef, dairy, goat, sheep and swine are asked to rotate through all the species and exhibit as they would during a showmanship class (where the judge places the class based upon the quality of the showperson in handling their animal and answering questions rather than the quality of the animal).  In the evening, 4-H hosts their premium sale supporter’s supper and premium sale.  Please join us at 5 pm for those events!

Summer is a busy time for county fairs and 4-H Achievement Days, as well as Extension Research Center Field Days.  Following is a list of the 2018 annual field day events.

                Have a great fair weekend!
