The Extension Connection

            Lake Region Extension Roundup is right around the corner, scheduled for January 8th and 9th in Devils Lake.  Both days start with breakfast at 8 a.m. General and concurrent sessions begin at 9 a.m. The general sessions are in the World War II Memorial Building. Concurrent sessions will be in the Memorial Building’s basement, the Armory Room, and the Historical Room and meeting room in the adjoining Ramsey County Courthouse.

General session topics on January 8th are:

* Small-grain performance

* North Dakota agricultural weather advancements

* Shifts in pigweed

* Managing nonproductive field areas

* New tillage options and effects on soil compaction

* “Finding Fairness in Farm Transition” will be the featured session.

Concurrent session topics that day include:

* Soybean production management, storage and handling

* North Dakota crop fertility overhaul

* Dry bean production and market outlook

* Weed control

* Income tax changes on the farm

* Introduction to becoming a certified seed grower

* Soil issues and cover crops

* Horticultural issues such as apple varieties and from vine to wine

* Unmanned aerial vehicle applications

* Sunflower production and market opportunities

* Market issues, including tariffs and trade implications

Topics for the general sessions January 9th are:

* Soil fertility issues

* Energy and marketing outlooks

* NDSU wheat breeder program

* 2018 canola review

* Corn industry update

* Managing barley on variable ground

The concurrent session topics that day are:

* Pea production and markets

* Soil health issues

* Weed control issues

* Land rents and values

* Understanding agricultural research

* Spray drift reduction

* 2019 insurance update

* Wheat and corn variety selection and other wheat issues

* Major canola disease research updates

* Land/machinery values and trends

* Bull selection

* 2019 livestock feeding concerns
