2020 Soybean Variety Trial Data Summary

Good day!!  I hope you are all well!

The Extension Office now owns a hay probe!  If you need hay sampled, let me know, I’m willing to come out to help.  Knowing the quality of your hay is important to making sound ration decisions.  Knowing the quality means you need to sample your hay and the most accurate way to test is to use a hay probe.

The 2020 NDSU Soybean Variety Trial Data is now available.  Come to the County Extension office to get a copy or visit on line at www.ag.ndsu.edu/varietytrails.

The closest NDSU soybean variety trial location to Griggs County was at Dazey, ND.  The trial was planted on May 28, 2020 and harvested October 6, 2020.  There were 38 varieties entered at this location from 12 companies.  The highest yielding soybean variety at this location was Dyna-Gro S07EN61, having the Enlist E3 herbicide trait, with a yield of 55.3 bushels per acre.  Other varieties yielding statistically similar to the Dyna-Gro variety included Dairyland DSR-0920E, having the Enlist E3 herbicide trait, with a yield of 51.5 bushels per acre, Integra-GF 50510, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 54.2 bushels per acre, Legacy LS 082-20, having the Enlist E3 herbicide trait, with a yield of 52.0 bushels per acre, Legend LS 08E127N, having the Enlist herbicide trait, with a yield of 52.0 bushels per acre, P3 Genetics 2005E, having the Enlist E3 herbicide trait, with a yield of 54.0 bushels per acre, Peterson 20X05, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 52.9 bushels per acre, and Syng NKS05-N5X, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 51.9 bushels per acre.  The highest yielding soybean variety for two years at the Dazey location was Syng NK S05-N5X with a yield of 57.8 bushels per acre.  The second highest yielding soybean variety for two years at this location was Syng NK S09-D4X, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 55.3 bushels per acre.

The next closest NDSU soybean variety trial location to Griggs County is at the Carrington Research and Extension Center.  The trial was planted May, 19, 2020 and harvested September 22, 2020.  There were 46 varieties entered at this location from 13 companies.  The highest yielding soybean variety at this location was Syng NK S05-N5X, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 73.3 bushels per acre.  Other varieties yielding statistically similar to the Syng NK variety included Peterson 19X03N, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 67.2 and REA RX0721, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 68.9 bushels per acre.  The highest yielding soybean variety for two years at this site was Syng NK S05-N5X with a yield of 74.9 bushels per acre.  The second highest yielding soybean variety for two years at this site was LG Seeds LGS0400RX, having the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend herbicide trait, with a yield of 66.3 bushels per acre.

The soybean cyst nematode trial was conducted at two locations, Prosper and Wyndmere.  The average highest yielding variety of the two locations was Golden Harvest GH0749X.  Other varieties yielding statistically similar were Dahlman 1108E3N, Dyna-Gro S10XT71, Dyna-Gro S11EN40, Golden Harvest GH0749X, Integra 40999N, Integra 41041N, Integra 50990N, REA RX0721, REA RX0929, REA RX1030, Syng NK S07-Q4X, Syng NK S09-D4X, Syng NK S12-T2X, and Syng NK S14-U9X.

If you have soils with iron-deficiency chlorosis (IDC), then Dairyland E9-201E had the lowest rating of all varieties tested at two locations.  Integra 50309N, Legend 009E955N, Legend 03X852N, and Pioneer P10A84X had statistically similar ratings to the Dairyland variety. 

Soybean variety selection should be based on maturity, yield, seed quality, lodging, iron-deficiency chlorosis tolerance and disease reactions.  In most years, later-maturing varieties tend to yield more than early-maturing varieties when evaluated at the same location.
