Experience Agriculture, Special Assignment: Pizza! is a collaborative program between the ND Farm Bureau and NDSU Extension in Walsh, Pembina and Grand Forks Counties.  This program is designed to give students a hands-on learning opportunity regarding the agricultural products that are raised in the local area.

For approximately one and a quarter hours, fourth grade students from Walsh, Pembina and Grand Forks counties visit a series of seven booths, each of which describes an agricultural product produced right here in the Red River Valley.  Themes of the seven booths are: nutrition, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, sugar, beef and pork products, wheat, and oil products.  In the process of visiting and participating in the hands-on activities at each booth the students come to realize that the agricultural products that are produced right here, can be made into something every fourth grader is familiar with, PIZZA!

In the fruits and vegetables booth the participants become familiar with different fruit and vegetable seeds and then take their chances at identifying fruits and vegetables in the "Mystery Boxes".  The dairy booth teaches about all of the products that come from milk; especially cheese.  In the beef and pork booth, the students learn about different kinds of meat while playing "Squeal of Fortune".  In the nutrition booth the students take part in "MyPlate Bingo" while learning about the importance of eating the right foods.  In the sugar booth, participants get to look at and touch actual sugar beets and then see how the beets are processed into sugar.  In the wheat booth, they actually get to take turns grinding wheat into flour!

Since pizza is an extremely popular food among children, this educational program is designed to help them relate the foods they are eating to agriculture.  We want our youth to realize that food actually comes from agriculture long before it arrives on grocery store shelves.

Fourth graders come to this event from Grand Forks County, Walsh County and Pembina County.  Classes are scheduled in groups of 1-20 (with an adult for each group) over a three day period.  More than 900 fourth grade students attend the Experience Agriculture, Special Assignment: Pizza! program.
