Pesticide Certification Update 2020

Private Pesticide Applicator Training season was abruptly cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the State Pesticide office has been working diligently with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the Governor’s office to address the situation. There have been many plans proposed and last week, Gov. Doug Burgum issued the final executive order. Executive Order 2020-17.1 specifically regarding pesticide applicator certification reads as follows:

Effective immediately, the April 1st expiration of commercial, public, private pesticide applicator certifications under NDCC Chapter 4.1-33 is hereby suspended during the pendency of the declared state of public health emergency.

So, applicators who were certified through April 1, 2020, retain their status and have until the end of the public health emergency to take the appropriate refresher training to renew their certificates. Any information you have received saying otherwise is superseded by this executive order.

Depending on your pesticide applicator status, below is information on how to proceed:

Private Pesticide Applicator Re-certification

Multiple Re-certification trainings were offered in April and May via an online webinar. If you did not attend a re-certification training, and your card is expiring, please follow the instructions under New Private Pesticide Applicator Certification.

If you attended a training online, please keep in mind that your certification will not be updated and your cards will not be mailed until payment is received. Payment due is $30.

Please make checks payable to NDSU Pesticide Program.

Mail checks to:

NDSU Extension, Grand Forks County
Attn: Nessa Halvorson
151 S. 4th St, Ste 302
Grand Forks, ND 58201

Once payment is received, and we verify attendance at a training, your card will be mailed out to you. If you have not received your card but feel you should have, please contact our office at 701-780-8229.

New Private Pesticide Applicator Certification

Through the duration of this public health emergency, online exams will be offered for new or expired private applicators. You will pay your $30 certification fee when you register for the exam. Please read the following directions carefully:

If you have already paid the fee to take a private general exam, please contact at the Grand Forks County Extension Office at 701-780-8229 for further instruction. Do not use the link below, or you will be charged twice.

To take the test, click here.

After you have paid the fees, you will receive an email containing enrollment instructions within 24 hours.

The only exam material you will need is the Curtail M Label (downloadable link).  I recommend you print this out for reference during your exam.

To take your exam, you will first need to make an account at campus.extension.org. If you would like to watch a seven-minute tutorial walking you through the process of creating an account and taking the exam, click here. To download the tutorial as a printable guide, click here.

There is no time limit for this test, so please take your time on it.  If you pass, save/print the certificate of completion for your records. NDSU will notify our office, and we will mail a ND Private Applicator License to the address provided. If you fail, you will need to wait three days before you can retake the exam. You can only take the exam three times.

These tests are to be taken individually. Receiving help with an exam is a violation of North Dakota Century Code.

Commercial Re-certification

Commercial re-certification has been rather successful in continuing education through ZOOM trainings.  Check the Pesticide Program page for future trainings if you require re-certification.

Commercial Certification Testing

The Grand Forks County Extension office is open to individuals requiring Commercial Pesticide Applicator testing by appointment only.

Register for your test materials.Have all payments completed and materials obtained from the state pesticide office before scheduling an appointment.

At this time, scheduling is restricted to Grand Forks County applicators only. Individuals from other counties should work with their local county Extension office.

Office hours open for testing by appointment only:

- Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:00am-5:00pm

- Lunch hour: 12:00pm-1:00pm

Due to scheduling, if individuals feel they may need more than one day to complete exams, this should be arranged ahead of time.

Call Nessa Halvorson at 701-787-8154 to schedule a time to take exams.

Please note that you will be screened prior to entering the building and required to wear a facemask for the duration of your time in the County Office Building.

I want to thank our North Dakota pesticide applicators for their patience as we navigate re-certification and certification during COVID-19. If you have any further questions, please contact me by email, at or phone at 701-780-8229.
