My name is Marina Kojic. I have had the privilege the last three years to teach a class called Gearing Up for Kindergarten. It is offered to 4 and 5 year old children, who will be going to kindergarten in the fall, and their families.

In the first 30 minutes of each session, parents and their child explore different centers and do activities that support math, science, sensory, language, literacy and social-emotional development. Playing a game, creating an art project, or even just exploring the different centers helps parents learn more about their children and their skills and also give them ideas on how they can help their children become more successful. It is great to see families having fun and working together on goals!

Following directions, staying on task, participating in story time, and taking turns are some of the essential skills needed for kindergarten. It is very important to help parents learn about what is expected at school and to give them the tools to help their children.

The last 30 minutes includes a parent session that covers topics such as brain development, learning styles, and early math skills, gives parents some basic information on how to not only help their children with necessary skills but also how to make that experience fun and exciting. Parents leave each class with a make and take home activity that is easy and ready to use and that helps build all of these kindergarten skills.

I greatly enjoyed teaching Gearing up for Kindergarten. It was exciting to teach both the children and the parents. It feels great to not only see the progress that students make in 10 weeks, but also to see how excited and confident they and their families are about going to kindergarten in the fall.
