Food Safety Question & Answer

How long can you store canned tomatoes or eggs?

I bought a case of canned tomatoes on sale.  How long can I keep canned tomatoes on my shelf?

The US Department of Agriculture recommends that we use canned acidic foods (tomatoes, fruits) within 18 months.  The food is safe much longer, but through time, you might notice color and flavor changes.

The sell by date listed on my eggs is today! Should I try to use all the eggs right away?

You can use the eggs much longer than the date on the carton.  Eggs are fine to use four to five weeks beyond the date that you purchased them.  Be sure your refrigerator keeps food at 40 degrees F for quality and safety.  Keep your eggs in the original carton instead of placing them in the door or your refrigerator, where the temperature in warmer.
