Chocolate Chip Applesauce Brownies

This healthy recipe comes from NDSU Extension Service.


  • 1 1/2 c. sugar (plus 1 Tbsp. sugar for topping)
  • 1/2 c. shortening, margarine or butter
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 c. applesauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. nuts, chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 c. chocolate chips


Preheat oven to 350 F. Beat the sugar and fat together. Add the eggs and then applesauce. Mix in dry ingredients. Grease or coat a 10- by 16-inch jelly roll pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour batter into pan. Sprinkle over the top: 1 tablespoon sugar, nuts and chocolate chips. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.


Makes 24 servings.

Per serving: 124 calories, 4 grams (g) fat, 21 g carbohydrate and 160 milligrams sodium.
