Three Bean Hot Dish

This healthy recipe comes from NDSU Extension Service.


  • 2 Pounds lean ground beef or ground turkey
  • 5 slices bacon (optional)
  • 1 Yellow onion slices
  • 1 15-ounce can of lima beans, drained
  • 1 15-ounce can pork and beans
  • 1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained
  • 3/4c. beef broth (low sodium)
  • 1 1-ounce envelope onion soup mix
  • 1/2c. ketchup
  • 1/4c brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder


  1. Fry bacon; drain well on a paper towel and set aside.
  2. Brown ground beef in a large pot. Drain fat.
  3. Add the other ingredients (except for the beef broth) to the pot. Simmer on low heat for one hour, stirring periodically. Gradually add the beef broth 1/4 cup at a time to the desired consistency. Cook to a final temperature of at least 165 F.

Makes 8 servings.
