Snacking on Popcorn

My grandchildren come over after school sports practice, and they love popcorn. Is popcorn a healthy snack?

Yes, popcorn provides nutrition and adds whole grain to your diet. Whole-grain foods contain the bran, endosperm and germ. We are encouraged to make half our grain choices whole grains. Instead of adding lots of butter and salt, try sprinkling it with garlic powder or chili powder. A cup of  air-popped corn contained about 30 calories, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of fiber. Lightly buttered popcorn has about 130 calories per cup.

Note: Remember that popcorn can be a choking hazard, especially for children under the age of 5. Always supervise young children when they are eating.
