Draining a Flooded Basement

Take your time when draining a flooded basement.

If your basement is full or nearly full of water, pump out just 2 to 3 feet of water per day. If you drain the basement too quickly, the pressure outside the walls will be greater than the pressure inside, causing the walls and floors to crack, damaging the foundation.

For more information about caring for your home after a flood, contact your county’s NDSU Extension Service office or visit NDSU’s flood website at www.ag.ndsu.edu/flood.
