Wet Books Need Special Care

Books that were soaked in floodwaters require special handling.

“They need to be dried slowly and carefully,” says [insert name and title] of [insert county name].

Here are some steps to take to salvage wet books:

  • If they are extremely damp, sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder between the pages to absorb moisture. Leave the cornstarch or powder in place for several hours, then brush it off.
  • Expose books to the air, then pile and press them together to keep the pages from curling. Alternate between drying and pressing until the materials are thoroughly dry to help prevent mildew.
  • Using a little heat and separating the pages near the end of the drying process may prevent musty odors.
