Creating a Portable File of Important Documents

Be Prepared

Plan ahead by organizing your financial information. Include essential documents in a grab-and-go kit in case of evacuation because of flood, fire or other disaster.

Contents of a Portable Fireproof Box

Keep these documents in portable fireproof box that can be grabbed if you must evacuate and can withstand fire if your home burns.

  • Birth certificates
  • Social Security cards
  • Marriage certificate
  • Religious certificates
  • Adoption papers
  • Drivers licenses (color copies)
  • Passports
  • Deed to your residence
  • Mortgage documents and other loan documents
  • Titles for vehicles
  • Insurance policies and agency contact information
  • Health insurance, prescription and other benefit card (copies)
  • Credit/debit/ATM cards (copies)
  • Tax returns for minimum three years
  • Wilsl, living wills, powers of attorney, letters of instruction and health care powers of attorney
  • Trust documents
  • Location of safe deposit boxes with key or key location
