Take Time for Gratitude

Allie Dhuyvetter, R.D., L.R.D., Program Assistant, NDSU Extension Service

Take time to stop, relax and reflect this month. September 21, is celebrated annually as “World Gratitude Day” by people across the world. Our lives can be insanely busy trying to juggle work, school and home activities. Be sure to take the time to appreciate all of the things we work so hard to obtain, whether that is food, a place to live, a vehicle or something else. Gratitude helps us realize what we have and can decrease our need for wanting more.

Studies have shown that people who take the time to express gratitude on a regular basis feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness and even have stronger immune systems. In fact, filling a journal with brief passages about the moments for which we are thankful can increase well-being and life satisfaction. Keeping a gratitude journal can shift your focus so that you always are looking for something new to be grateful for each day.

This day serves as a reminder to slow down and ponder all of the good and wonderful things that are present in life. Taking time to reflect on all of the positive aspects of life can help us feel more fulfilled and happy.
