Remember to Be Sun Savvy During Outdoor Services

With nice weather upon us and summer just around the corner, many faith communities will be moving their services outdoors. The warm sunshine, fresh air, and ability to rejoice make outdoor services a favorite of many members. Remember to keep sun safety in mind.

  • Remind parishioners to wear sunscreen or hats if you hold outdoor worship after 10 a.m. The sun’s rays are strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Choose a shady location. Trees offer good shade to escape the sun’s direct rays.
  • Provide a tent or shade structure. If shade from trees is not an option consider a tent or other shade structure such as large umbrellas to offer shade for congregants.
  • Have sunscreen available. Have sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or more on hand for individuals to use.
  • Offer water. Especially on hot days, hydration is key.

Keeping these tips in mind will ensure your faith community is sun savvy while enjoying the outdoors.
