Exploring Other Cultures With a Fresh Fruit Bowl

My name is Larissa Gonçalves. I’m a nutrition senior-year undergraduate student from Brazil. I was a short-intern at the NDSU Extension Food and Nutrition Department, and I’m going to share with you one simple way to get fresh this summer.

In Brazil, we have different fruit options, and we also are a major producer of oranges, pineapples, papaya and coconuts, thanks to the country’s warm, fruit-friendly climate. Fruits are full of vitamins that are essential for the proper functioning of our body. You might see the “dragon fruit” in the local grocery store; it’s bright pink with a white center and lots of tiny black seeds.

We can create a fresh fruit bowl with a Brazilian touch using the fruits that are in the local market here. Add some yogurt to have protein in your bowl of fruit, and add orange juice to give a fresh taste.

Here are some reasons for you to prepare a bowl of various fruits!

Passion fruit – Immune system support

Papaya – Improve intestinal transit

Strawberry – Helps prevent cardiovascular disease

Melon – Helps in hydration

Pineapple – Helps in digestion

Kiwi – Helps in cancer prevention

Apple – Reduce bad cholesterol
