Choosing Annual and Perennial Flowers


Perennials often are used to solve troublesome spots in the landscape. Some of these areas might be wet, dry or shady, or possess infertile soil. Annuals are used for their continuous flower color throughout most of the growing season. Here are some suggestions for planting flowers in specific locations in and around the landscape. What Color is Your Food?


People need different amounts of fruits and vegetables depending on their age, gender and amount of daily physical activity. Scientists are regularly reporting new health benefits associated with fruits and vegetables, so eating more fruits and vegetables is a worthwhile goal. Sports Drinks: R They Needed?

Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, Powerade and All Sport, contain carbohydrates and electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium and chloride. They are made for physical activity, to help rehydrate and to keep energy levels high. Are sports drinks really necessary? Not always. You can get these same benefits from other sources. A sports drink is not better for you unless you are active for 60 to 90 minutes or are exercising in very hot conditions. Anything less, and water should be the drink of choice. Flickr: Q. Speaks.

Pulse Foods in Your Diet

Pulses are a type of legume characterized by seeds that grow in pods and include chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans), lentils and dry peas. Pulse foods are rich sources of protein, fiber, vitamins such as folate, and minerals such as iron and potassium. They are low in fat and sodium, and are naturally gluten- and cholesterol-free. Researchers have reported that regular consumption of pulses may reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

Colon Cancer Prevention & Screening

The North Dakota Cancer Coalition estimates that about 400 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year. Colorectal cancer is very treatable when detected early. When detected late, it often is a very serious and fatal disease. If undetected, colorectal cancer cells may spread to the liver and other organs. Once symptoms develop, the five-year survival rate may be as low as 8 percent.

Safely Heating Baby Food


It is always important to use safe heating practices to keep your baby happy and healthy. Although you may be an expert at feeding your little one, remember that babysitters and family members may not know how to heat bottles and food correctly. Manage Stress for Better Health

stress 2Constant stress can lead to many diseases. For example, high blood pressure as a result of stress can cause heart problems, including heart attacks. Stress also can cause headaches, migraines, back pain and ulcers. Research also has associated stress with a weak immune system. Managing Apple Scab

Apple scab, caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis, is a potentially serious disease of fruit trees and woody plants in the rose family. Crabapples, apples, mountain ash, pear, cotoneaster and hawthorne are all susceptible to this disease. N.D.’s Aging Population

The leading edge of the baby boom began to turn 65 in 2011. That year, 14.4 percent of North Dakota’s population was 65 and older, the 12th highest proportion in the nation. In 16 of the state’s 53 counties, the proportion was at least 23 percent. By 2025, 26 counties are expected to have at least 23 percent seniors. Statewide, the number of seniors is expected to increase by 50 percent (98,595 in 2011 to 148,060 in 2025), with the overall state proportion rising to 17.6 percent.
