The NEW eXtension (11/19/2014)

In 2014, a national eXtension Strategic Planning Committee was charged to present a plan for increasing eXtension’s value to land-grant institutions and partners. The outcome of their review was a plan for a new funding model and focus for eXtension. Currently each state’s Extension system is assessed a mandatory fee to support the national system. This mandatory assessment was not unanimously supported. Hence, votes were taken to discontinue the current assessment and move to a membership fee funding model. The positive results of the voting were shared this week, and the “NEW eXtension” model will be implemented.

The NEW eXtension will focus on two primary areas: professional development and innovative opportunities. The NDSU Extension Service will enroll in the NEW eXtension at the premium membership level rather than the basic level. A key feature of the premium level is that it provides continued access to Moodle, which is not available at the basic level. The fee for the premium membership level is 25 percent less than our current assessment. The NEW eXtension will continue to support Ask an Expert, Communities of Practice, professional development through Learn, new technology innovations, etc. We look forward to the new focus and opportunities that the NEW eXtension system will provide.
