North Dakota 4-H Camp update and 2014 camp season (4/8/2014)

Building/Renovation Project

We are excited to be finishing the planning/design phase of the renovation and new building project, and are transitioning to developing construction contracts with general, mechanical and electrical contractors. The new Johnsrud 4-H Education Center will provide us new, flexible indoor space, bathing/showering facilities for the camp and additional sleeping arrangements organized as sleeping cabins adjacent to the new building. The separation of the sleeping cabins from the main building was necessary to avoid having very expensive fire suppression (sprinkler system) installed in the entire new facility. In addition to the new building, the three existing cabins and the dining hall will also be renovated. Check out the renderings of the interior, exterior front and exterior back of the new building. This addition to the camp campus will greatly enhance its utility well into the future.

The entire project came in near budget. JLG Architects has led us through a great design and bidding process. It has also been a time of many questions, discussions and concerns related to the scope of the project, funds available and the contractor climate in this area of the state. They did a great job coaching us through the design, alterations and cost projections with an affordable end result. We will continue to raise funds for items that contribute to functionality of the camp including patios, furniture, fixtures and equipment needs of the facility. Watch for details about that campaign.

We are planning a groundbreaking ceremony for late July 2014 and will be turning the camp over to the contractors on August 4 with completion scheduled for the end of April 2015.

Camp Program

The 2014 North Dakota 4-H camp season is set, and registration is open. Registration and promotional materials were sent to county offices the first week of March. Seventeen different camps are offered from May 27 to July 31. Adventure Camps will be offered as four different sessions; Family Fun Camp is back with a weekend of family fun, including a luau; and a brand new All Archery Camp will encourage mastery in everything archery! Camps specifically for youth of military families are also part of the schedule. The benefits of camping, from a research perspective, are well documented. The camp is a state-wide entity, and registrations from throughout the state are wanted. Please recruit youth – registrations from all counties will help the Extension Service meet its camper goals at North Dakota 4-H Camp this year!

We look forward to a successful 2014 camping season and to a fully renovated facility in 2015. We thank the great group of staff and volunteers who are providing leadership in supporting the renovation and the camping program. We really look forward to this great, new and refurbished 4-H Camp. It’s all for the youth, and they will love it!
