Julie Garden-Robinson receives NCR Excellence in Extension Award (9/17/2015)

Julie Garden-Robinson Sept 2015At the North Central Region (NCR) Extension Directors and program leaders meeting this week in Sioux Falls, SD, applause rang out for a familiar face. Dr. Julie Garden-Robinson, professor, and Extension food and nutrition specialist, was awarded the 2015 NCR Excellence in Extension award for sustained and meritorious Extension programming. Julie was chosen by the region’s directors from an excellent slate of nominees who reflect the exceptional talents and programs that make Extension proud. Nominees need to have high impact programs, visionary leadership and a commitment to diversity; be able to anticipate emerging issues; and be recognized as a leader. They also need to garner a continual flow of resources for sustainable Extension programs, use innovative teaching methods and be recognized by peers and the audiences served. Julie’s done that and more. Here are just a few examples that were cited in her nomination:

- Julie’s programming has focused on the health and wellness and food safety. She has excelled in teamwork not only within her department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, but with Education, Plant Sciences, Horticulture, 4-H, Animal Sciences, Pharmacy, Sociology and 16 commodity groups, government and professional groups. Through these collaborations, she has received more than $12 million in external funding.

- She has helped develop and deliver numerous prize-winning educational programs for diverse audiences including New Americans, Native Americans and diverse ages.

- She excels in developing novel Extension curricula and evaluating the impacts of these programs.

- Julie’s accomplishments have garnered university, state and national recognition. Examples of this are Exceptional Contributions to Scholarly Activity from the College of Human Development and Education; Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science’s Researcher of the Year award; 11 Program Excellence Awards; Extension Communicator of the Year; Excellence in Extension Award (Early Career); and the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences’ (NEAFCS) Food Safety Education Award (twice), National Marketing Award and National Communication Award.

Chris Boerboom had the pleasure of presenting the award as chair of the North Central Region directors this year.
