Interns receiving hands-on, local experience (7/23/2013)

The four Extension interns in the county offices have been hard at work with a variety of activities and programs as well as learning more about the day-to-day operations in a county office. Here are a few highlights:

Justin BartholomayJustin Bartholomay (left), summer intern located in Ransom County, spent a week helping with the 4-H Trail Riding Camp, assisted with a local youth day camp, and has been helping with multiple achievement days throughout the region. He also chaperoned Extension 4-H Youth Conference.Ferin Davis

Ferin Davis (right), summer intern in Rolette County, has been involved in the 21st Century Summer Garden program, worked with their local entrepreneurship camp, spent a week helping with 4-H Adventure Camp near Washburn, and presented a lesson on grasses during Conservation Day at Turtle Mountain.

Olivia Heintz

Olivia Heintz (left), Junior Master Gardener (JMG) intern in Burleigh County, has been leading that program in four of the local elementary schools this summer.  The goal has been to incorporate ecology-themed children’s literature into gardening.  She is also featuring the JMG program at the local farmer’s market each week.

Megan Piper

Megan Piper (right), summer intern located in Richland County, has been working on food preservation demonstrations and lessons, compiling information for the local farmer’s market, and getting involved with the Kids in the Kitchen program.  She also served as a chaperone for the Extension 4-H Youth Conference.

In addition, the interns have prepared press releases, attended multiple meetings with the local agents, and completed interviews with agents, specialists and local decision-makers. The goals of the Extension intern program are to have the interns gain a better understanding of NDSU Extension, recognize the skills necessary for an Extension professional, and experience the daily activities in a county setting.  Many thanks to the county staffs for hosting and mentoring these interns. It has been great to have Justin, Ferin, Olivia and Megan on board this summer.
