Burleigh County Junior Master Gardener interns (7/17/2014)

The Junior Master Gardener program is thriving in Burleigh County this summer due to the hard work of five summer interns who work on a variety of garden and nutrition-related programs. Meet them (from left to right):

Burleigh County JMG Interns 2014

Jacy O’Keefe is currently a student at the University of North Dakota studying Community Nutrition. During her internship, Jacy has been involved in all areas of the Family Nutrition Program and is taking the lead on the JMG program at the five low-income schools in Bismarck.

Maria Hoff, a student at Minnesota State University-Moorhead majoring in Exercise Science and running track, is also involved in all areas of youth programming.

Kelsey Sheldon joined us for a second summer and is taking on the bulk of our Operation Fun Day Camp lessons. Kelsey graduated from NDSU in May with a degree in Agricultural Education and a minor in Extension Education. In addition to her work with the day camps, Kelsey has been spending much of her time answering horticulture questions.

Brock Pittsley just completed his freshman year at the University of Mary where he is majoring in History Education. Brock is assisting in all areas of youth programming this summer. When he isn’t at work, Brock spends the majority of his time practicing with the UMary football team.

KaDee Berger, a May 2014 graduate from Bismarck State College, will be attending North Dakota State College of Science this fall to complete her degree in Dental Hygiene. Along with Maria and Brock, KaDee has assisted Kelsey and Jacy with Operation Fun and the JMG school program. The three of them have also created youth programs and activities for the Horticulture Coffee Talks, BisMarket, First Steps Daycare, and the Summer Feeding Program through Great Plains Food Bank.

More youth than ever are being reached through JMG as a result of Kelsey, Jacy, Brock, Maria and KaDee's efforts.
