Minutes of the November 1, 2011 ESP Meeting

Epsilon Sigma Phi Upsilon Chapter
November 1, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Andrew Thostenson at 11:35 a.m.

Guests: Dave Rice, Vern Hoffman

Secretary’s Report: J.W. Schroeder made motion to approve the minutes (with corrections) of the March 30, 2011 meeting. Peggy Anderson seconded. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report: Donna Anderson made a motion to accept the report. Debb Pankow seconded.

Committee Reports:

Audit – Ken Hellevang reported the ESP Upsilon Chapter financial records have been audited. There is a $9.69 difference (to the good) between the balance on hand and the beginning balance plus receipts minus expenses that cannot be explained after considerable investigation.

History and Retirees – Andrew is seeking volunteers to help with this area. Duane Hauck agreed to serve in this capacity.

Karla Monson reported no new members.

Professional Development – Peggy Anderson shared that without Spring 2012 Extension Conference the 2012 fall awards at Extension Fall Conference will still work well. A similar process will continue to be used for award nominations. No changes need to be made.

Member Services – Jackie Buckley shared that it doesn’t matter if we do scholarships in the fall. Scholarship applications are solicited before fall conference, the committee meets before fall conference and then the scholarships are announced. National scholarships solicitation out by December 15th.

Membership – Rick Schmidt talked about ESP being smaller than other organizations. Rick wants names of potential ESP members. He would like to personally invite them to be a member. Question – Do we have talking points about ESP? Discussion – We do have talking points on the ESP website. A little booklet from National ESP would also be good. Ken Hellevang would like something to talk from when talking about ESP. Reminder - $200 life membership in ESP – local chapter will pay $50 of that.

NDJCEP Meeting – Rick Schmidt shared information about silent auction at Extension Fall Conference – ESP will take ownership of auction in 2014. Breakdown of silent auction proceeds – 55% organization managing the auction; 15% ESP; 15% Family Consumer Science; 15% Ag Agents. Discussed putting together a video to recruit new members into various organizations – have it ready by 2012 Extension Fall Conference. Other ideas include – one membership dues that will cover various organizations and do a survey about why people aren’t joining organizations. Kathy shared that National ESP has marketing information on their website. Survey was done in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Central as well.

National ESP Report – Kathy Tweeten shared an update about National ESP Conference October 2011 in Syracuse, New York. It was an excellent conference. Conference information is at Endowment fund is still making progress with a goal of $500,000. They are now at $380,000. If you give $100 you can have an apple pin from National Conference. Vice President for region has always been elected at JCEP meeting, now will be elected at National meeting in Mobile, AL next fall, October 7-10, 2012. February 7-9, 2012 is JCEP Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. PILD is April 15-18, 2012 and National JCEP Conference is September 15-20, 2013. Awards can be submitted online, do on National website. We (ND) don’t have any nominations for national awards. January 31, 2012 is electronic submission of Chapter reports. January 20, 2012 is deadline for ESP Connection articles, remember to submit articles.

Andrew presented Duane with an ESP plaque for his service in the ESP Chapter during his Extension career. Duane shared comments about his ESP experiences and what it means to be an Extension professional, what Extension is all about and that everyone in Extension should be part of ESP.

Jay Fisher made a motion to adjourn. Jan Knodel seconded. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 12:50 p.m.
