Lesson 5 - Cherry-chocolate Scones (Quick breads/scones)


1 1/2 cups all-purpose white flour

1 cup whole-wheat flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. baking powder

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup dried cherries

1 3/4 cups heavy cream


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 

2. Mix flours, sugar, salt, baking powder, chocolate chips and dried cherries together in a bowl. 

3. Make a well in the center of the mixture and add the heavy cream.

4. Mix until all dry ingredients are combined. 

5. Form into a large circle (about the size of a large plate) and flatten slightly.

6. Cut into 10 pieces and place on baking sheet.

7. Bake for 16 to 20 minutes or until slightly browned. 

8. Remove to wire cooling rack.

9. If desired, melt chocolate chips in a small glass bow (10 to 15 seconds per cycle, until melted) and drizzle over the tops of the scones with a spoon. 

Makes 20 servings (half scone per serving).  Each serving has 170 calories, 9 grams (g) fa, 3 g protein, 21 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber and 200 milligrams sodium.
