Barley:  From Field to Glass

NDSU Extension Service Seminar in Belfield

The NDSU Extension Service will conduct a summer seminar entitled “Barley:  From Field to Glass” in cooperation with the North Dakota Barley Council on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the Greg Kessel farm approximately 2.5 miles west and 1 mile south of Belfield, ND (13261 37th St., Belfield, ND) beginning at 1:00 PM MDT.

“Significant growth in the craft brewing industry is generating increased interest in barley production” states Ryan Buetow, NDSU Area Extension Specialist in Cropping Systems, who is organizing this educational event.  “This program follows barley from variety development through utilization, thus providing a comprehensive overview of the importance of barley as an ingredient in the malting and brewing industry.”

Topics to be covered include:  1) barley variety development, presented by Dr. Richard Horsley, barley breeder from NDSU.  This presentation will include plot tours at the Kessel farm; 2) the history of beer, presented by NDSU professor of malt quality Dr. Paul Schwarz; 3) from grain to glass – a home brewers perspective, presented by Jon Stika, home brewer/maltster and certified beer judge; 4) managing barley diseases, presented by NDSU Extension small grains pathologist Dr. Andrew Friskop; and 5) marketing malting barley as a specialty crop, presented by NDSU Extension crops economist Dr. Frayne Olson.

“Representatives from the North Dakota Barley Council will be in attendance, which provides participants with an additional resource to discuss the changing market for malting barley”, states Buetow.

CEU credits will be available for Certified Crop Advisers.  DREC July 2016 Field Days flyer.

Pre-registration is required. You can register online here or contact Ryan Buetow at ryan.buetow@ndsu.edu with the subject title Barley or call 701-456-1106.
