Breana Kiser, Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent

4-4-10 State Horse ResultsDickey County Horse Team competed over the weekend at the 4-H State Horse contests held March 23rd and 24th.  On March 23rd, the team competed in the contests Horse Judging and Horse Hippology at the NDSU Equine Center. On March 24th, the team competed in Horse Quizbowl and a member competed in Illustrated Talk on NDSU Campus at the Family Life Center Building.

The horse team members are (pictured left to right) Kali Norton, Elle Cline, Sara Young, Elli Lloyd, and Lily Thorpe. (team member unable to participate at state was Emma Rodine)
The first contest was 4-H Horse Judging which provides an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H Horse projects to enhance their equine evaluation and selection skills. Participants judged 7 classes that included 3 halter class and 4 performance classes. Participants then prepared sets of oral reasons and meet one-on-one with an official to describe the reasons for their class placement. This contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal.

Then the youth competed in 4-H Hippology contest where the youth are able to demonstrate their knowledge of equine science related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Youth build their knowledge of equine science, management, safety, welfare and ethics as they prepare for this contest. They then apply this knowledge in practical ways through Hippology contests and hands-on learning. Youth are tested on all aspects of the horse and equine industry.

Teams compete in four (4) different phases:
•    Examination Phase
•    2) Station Phase
•    3) Judging Phase
•    4) Team Problem

Then the youth competed in 4-H Quizbowl Contest on Sunday. Competition in quiz bowl encourages 4-H members to develop a more complete knowledge of an animal and related subjects. As a result, a quiz bowl contest is an excellent way to develop self-confidence and excellent teamwork skills. Teams compete in a single or double elimination format by giving oral answerers to questions posed by a moderator, answering by pushing the buzzer first. Each match has both an individual one-on-one and a toss-up question round. Awards are to the team and also to individuals who accumulate individual points be answering questions each round.

The North Dakota 4-H Horse Speech contests are broke into Demonstrations/Illustrated Talks and Public Speeches. The contest is designed to encourage youth to teach others how to do something related to horses, utilizing the correct use of visuals and equipment. With a demonstration, you are describing to your audience “HOW TO” do a particular activity. In this contest, you will use visual aids to demonstrate how to accomplish what you are excited to teach in a step-by-step procedure with an end product or result. An illustrated talk is defined as a presentation of an idea or topic of the horse industry that uses visual ads to convey the message. Public speeches use no visual aids and delivery of a horse related speech.

The winning 4-H senior teams in each category from the State 4-H Horse contests will have a choice to represent North Dakota at the National 4-H Hippology Contest at the Western National Round Up 4-H Hippology in Denver, Colorado.
