Waterhemp has Emerged

We anticipated waterhemp to germinate and emerge around May 10 in west central Minnesota and May 15 in the southern valley. And mother nature didn’t disappoint, regardless of the late spring. Waterhemp emerges at approximately cumulative 350 growing degree days (GDD), (base 48 F).

Some asked if the late spring would delay emergence. It hasn’t affected emergence because most of the GDDs accumulate in late April and early May, when air and soil temperatures began to increase. I am aware of waterhemp emergence in Richland and Wilkin Counties in the southern valley.

There are resistant biotypes of waterhemp and waterhemp germinates and emerges in response to rainfall events from mid-May through the month of July and into early August, especially in an open canopy.
