Northwest ND (08/13/20)

Information from the Northwest region of North Dakota.

Harvest is underway in Northwest ND. Last week winter wheat and pea were being harvested and this week will see that continue along with some of the first spring wheat and durum to come off. Everything is drying down quickly after temperatures in the low 90’s and upper 80’s late last week with very low humidity and no precipitation. This week’s forecast is similar with highs in the 90’s through mid-week and then 80’s heading into the weekend. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms late Thursday and overnight into Friday. If much rain falls, it will slow things down a little, but then sunny conditions are supposed to return over the weekend.

Farmers are desiccating pea and lentil crops in anticipation of harvest. Chickpea is starting to turn color but probably won’t get desiccated for another week or so. Late season crops like sunflower and soybean continue to mature, but would benefit from additional rain. Sunflower is R5 and starting to flower. Soybean is filling pods but has not yet started to turn color.
