Grasshopper Hot Spots (07/18/19)

Grasshoppers are starting to increase in some areas of ND that were dryer earlier in the year, such as Harvey, Mohall, Lansford and central Benson County. Continue to scout for increasing grasshopper populations and hot spots in field crops. Grasshoppers will continue to feed on field crops until they are fairly mature and dry. Then, grasshoppers will move out and search for greener and later-maturing crops to feed on, like soybeans, sunflowers, flax.

The economic threshold is based on the densities of grasshopper per square yard (see table below). Threatening is considered the action threshold for grasshoppers. Since it is difficult to estimate the number of grasshoppers per square yard when population densities are high, pest managers can use four 180-degree sweeps with a 15-inch sweep net, which is equivalent to the number of adult (or nymph) grasshoppers per square yard.
