To combat this trend, the ND Master Gardener Program will award grants for the construction of pollinator teaching gardens at the county level.   4-H Science Club: Engaging Middle-School Youth in After-School Clubs Part 1 Use dry ice to blow lids off 5-gallon buckets of homemade soda, shrink wrap a co-worker with a vacuum and large garbage bag, or blend your own red cabbage pH indicator and watch the rainbow of colors you can change it to with common household liquids! This series of weekly science labs utilizes hands-on science experiments and labs to build science-related life skills in middle-school youth.  This packaged program includes lab procedures, supply lists, youth handouts, a custom 4-H Science Club record book and youth demonstrations.   Weed Resistance Management Working Group: A One-Year Progress Report A Crops Team-sponsored signature program was initiated as a call to action during the 2014 Fall Conference. First, we wanted to create awareness of herbicide-resistant weeds, especially Palmer amaranth, and second, we wanted to develop teaching materials so agriculturalists could properly identify weeds and rapidly implement a coordinated response. 1:30 Sessions on the Move (tours) North Dakota Heritage Center The Heritage Center is ND's official museum, and it has recently undergone a major expansion. This tour will focus on opportunities for educators to utilize the vast resources of the Center. After a brief welcome, we will tour exhibits considered most appealing to agriculturists and youth educators. The staff will provide an overview of their new online North Dakota Studies program, which is targeted to 8th gradeer. They have a suitcase exhibit program in which they offer thematic trunks to educators, so we may gain some tips on how to design an engaging exhibit. We'll have an opportunity to walk through new exhibits and the gift shop.    
  United Tribes Technical College Learn about the development of a 1994 Land-Grant Tribal College that focuses on nutrition education and agroecology in Tribal communities. Cultural traditions enrich UTTC Extension programs and activities and incorporate holistic health and wellness. Also, enjoy a campus tour that highlights several of the campus gardens, historic buildings and the commercial teaching kitchen that showcases the Nutrition and Foodservice degree programs.  
  Northern Lights Dairy Head out to Northern Lights Dairy to have the Holle family give you a personalized tour of how they run their operation. Watch everything from cows being milked in the parlor to cows in the barns to grains in the commodity area. You will see every aspect of their dairy farm.   
  ND 4-H Camp Join us to tour the renovated cabins and dining hall, and the new Johnsrud Education Center at 4-H Camp. While touring camp, you also will see some new activities and site improvements.   
  Northern Great Plains Laboratory (ARS), Mandan This USDA Agricultural Research Services facility develops technologies and management strategies that promote sustainable crop, livestock and rangeland systems. We will have an overview of projects and a tour of their National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) tower project. This megaproject monitors the environment in real-time for factors such as presence of insects, subterranean life and greenhouse gases. We will tour NDSU research projects involving biomass production and sugar beet processing.   
  Menoken Farm This farm is an educational site with 150 acres of cropland owned and operated by the Burleigh County Soil Conservation District since 2009. Tours and topics will include a soil pit, cover crops, grazing systems, and interseeding. Learn how taking a systems approach to farming and ranching can make an operation more sustainable and profitable.  
  Lincoln Oakes Nursery/Plant Materials Center These organizations support landscaping, conservation, wildlife and restoration plantings. Lincoln Oakes Nursery is operated by the ND Association of Soil Conservation Districts. In fall, they pull out bare root stock, grade plants and prepare them for winter storage. We will tour these operations and see some of their most promising trees and shrubs.

  Manure and Nutrient Management:Is Their Grass Greener? Can manure or compost meet fertilizer recommendations? What do producers need to know before integrating manure or compost into their fertilizer program? Is there a tool to help plan both manure and commercial fertilizer applications?   Ditch Hay Pilot Program: Overall Results and Bringing Them to Your Producers The ditch hay pilot program was initiated in Summer 2015.   Local Foods Leadership Training There is rising interest in the use of local and regionally grown food, and North Dakota is experiencing this growth. Industrial Hemp Production in North Dakota The 2014 farm bill authorizes industrial hemp research and pilot programs under the authority of state departments of agriculture.  The Langdon REC was chosen to test industrial hemp. We will discuss the process and hoops that needed to be completed before we could test hemp, general production practices and what we learned during our first year of testing.   Long-term Health Care Planning: A Subset of Farm/Ranch Transition and Estate Planning Long-term health care has become a major issue for farm families who want to transition the farm business to the next generation. Without a plan, the farm business is facing a potentially huge financial risk due to the skyrocketing cost of long-term care.   Community Beautification through Nutrition Education and Gardening Using Community Development Block Grant funding and partnering with the United Way Day of Caring, we built and distributed 140 portable garden boxes to low-income Bismarck residents. Each recipient is tracking what they grow and reporting on produce consumed and money saved. Funding and volunteers have been secured to expand this program for the 2016 growing season.
