Cropping Decisions 2018

Mark your calendars! It will soon be time for the early winter, crop management meeting held by NDSU Extension in north central and northwest North Dakota.

Tentative dates and locations include:

Rugby—December 3rd, 9 am

Lignite—December 4th, 9 amGranville – December 3rd, 1 pm

Wildrose—December 4th,  1 pm

Minot—December 5th,  1 pm

Mohall—December 6th, 9 am

Bottineau—December 6th, 1 pm

Topics this year will address many of the problems producers saw during the 2018 growing season and help plan for managing or avoiding those problems next season.

Weed resistance issues just keep getting bigger and new weeds keep showing up. Weed management plans need to consider weed identification, multiple herbicide modes of action, crop rotations, herbicide carryover, tillage options, and timing of planting.

Root rots in pulse crops were big issues this year and many areas saw big increases in insect problems like wheat stem sawfly. Disease and insect control will be an important topic as you think about next year’s crops.

Farm revenue and profitable farm management are always important. NDSU Extension has a new Agriculture finance Specialist. Cropping decisions 2018 will be a great opportunity to meet Bryon Parman, as he demonstrates the use of the “Crop Compare” software program to make crop planting decisions.

Frayne Olson, NDSU Extension Crop marketing Specialist is always a favorite speaker as he provides his views and comparisons of crop storage, usage, and carryover, and their possible effects on grain markets.
