2017 Variety Trials Available

Thinking about next year’s crop? What varieties of wheat, durum, canola, flax or other crops will you seed? The NDSU Research Centers across the state test both public and private varieties of most of our crops. Printed publications for most crops won’t be ready for at least a couple of months but researchers are putting results online as they are tabulated. You can find them by going to https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/varietytrials . By following the links on the page it is easy to find 2017 Spring wheat results from Minot, Chickpeas from Dickinson, or Durum from Dickinson and Carrington. Previous year’s data are also available on the site.

The data is available in pdf format and you will find information like the “days to heading”, “plant height”, “test weight”, and “protein” along with yields from 2015, 2016, 2017, and the two and three year averages.

Taking a quick look at the data for Hard Red Spring wheat at Minot you will find that the varieties are sorted by the 3 year average yield  with LCS Nitro at the top of the list with a 3 year average of 80.5 bu per acre. However it was not the top yielder for 2017 and its 14.6% protein and 57.6 lb test weight are less impressive and its high 3 year average reflects its amazing 109.1 bu yield in 2016. Whether you are looking for a spring wheat , durum, canola, soybean or other crop variety don’t get hung up on one years data or one number like yield or protein. Make sure you look for consistency of data across multiple years and multiple locations.
