Timing of Cover Crops

Using cover crops continues to be a challenge in our area. Adequate moisture for germination, excessive flea beetle populations, and simply the amount of time for growth following harvest of a cash crop in our area have been major limitations to the use of cover crops. The following article from Ezra Aberle, Agronomy Research Specialist at the Carrington Research & Extension Center shows some surprising results and points to the need for more research related to cover crops and interseeding.  Three years of research with a barley cash crop showed no significant differences in Barley yield when covercrops were seeded with the barley!
