Fertilizer Applied: 100 lbs/a N
Yield
Goal:
Row Spacing: 7 inches
Harvest Date: August 13-September 3
General Observations:
Stands were generally good but the plants seemed
shorter in height than normal. The fourth replication showed considerable green
regrowth as the plants should have been maturing, possibly due to herbicide
drift from the surrounding soybean field. The fourth replication was therefore
excluded from the data analysis.

General Observations:
The trial received virtually no
rain for more than 1 ½ months after it was planted, causing reduced emergence.
Stands were very variable, ranging from 10% to 80% on a plot basis. A covariance
analysis was used to adjust plot yields for stand.

later part of the season.

Crop: Wheat
Seeding Rate: 12 viable seeds/ft2
Seed Treatment:

Soil Type: Clay loam
Soil Test: 26-22-600 N-P-K
Fertilizer Applied: 100-20-0-15 N-P-K-S in the fall
Yield Goal: 2200
lbs/a
Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows
Harvest Date: August 13, 18, 21
General Observations:
The Crookston site looked good this year despite
the flooded conditions it received in early spring and early July. The low
yields experienced at Crookston are probably a result of the spring flooding
which likely caused us to lose some nitrogen. The high C.V. of the yield is
likely due to the flooding that occurred in July. During the July flood, half of
each rep in the trial was under water for about two days with some plots in
small depressions sitting under water much longer. There were major yield
reductions in plots that were in the depressions. These plots had their yields
adjusted to better reflect variety performance.

Furadan CR-10, Benlate
Soil Type: Clay loam
Soil Test: 34-10-400-8
N-P-K-S
Fertilizer Applied: 5-35-0-6 N-P-K-S; 110 lbs as urea in the fall
Yield Goal: 2100 lbs/a
Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows
Harvest Date:
September 8, 23, October 2
General Observations:
The Kennedy site turned
out better than we expected. Unfortunately, we were forced to plant this site
into dry soil and the area did not receive rain for three weeks. At least a few
seeds in each plot germinated early, but most didn't germinate till it rained.
In mid-July the two flushes were very obvious. The early flush was in full bloom
while the late flush was just bolting. The 10% and 90% bloom notes were not
taken due to the two flushes. Fortunately, the cool August allowed the late
flush to set good seed. The field, which the Kennedy site was located in,
consisted of Hyola 330 and Hyola 420. It also had two flushes and yielded about
1760 lbs/a.
The Kennedy site was not end trimmed, like the rest of our
sites, so yield was estimated on a basis of 6' x 22' to account for the border
effect on the ends of the plots. Normally, plot sizes are 5' x 20' on 6' centers
and are end trimmed to 15' long shortly before swathing providing a harvested
plot size of 6' x 15'. The lack of end trimming may have given the hybrid
canola's an unfair yield advantage over the open pollinated lines. Plots were
swathed as the majority of each plot reached physiological maturity.

Planting Date: May 21
Previous Crop: Wheat
Seeding Rate: 12 viable seeds/ft2
Seed Treatment: Furadan CR-10, Benlate
Soil Type: Clay loam
Soil
Test: 58-34-320-23 N-P-K-S
Fertilizer Applied: 13-30-0-15 N-P-K-S; 70 lbs as
anhydrous in spring
Yield Goal: 2100 lbs/a
Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows
Harvest Date: August 26, September 9
General Observations:
The
Fosston site looked very promising this year with good yields, good uniformity
and only a little white mold. Unfortunately, soon after the late plots were
swathed, a storm came through with very little rain and 70 mile per hour winds
that lasted about four hours. The wind caused losses to most of the plots that
were still in the field. Overall, 38% of the plots were damaged by the wind,
which affected the yields of 26 of the 35 varieties. In the data summary, were
reported an estimated yield for the varieties that were affected by the winds.
The yield adjustments were based on an estimate of how much of each plot blew
away. We are making adjustments on our plot layout for next year to avoid a
similar problem.

problems (flea beetles, armyworms, grasshoppers) were insignificant. Diseases
were not observed.

General
Observations:
The growing season was quite favorable for canola production.
The key was establishing good stands as late May and early June seedbed
conditions were very dry. There was a fair amount of lodging in the trial this
year. Some lodged plots send out branches from axially buds which resulted in
later end flowering than had the plot not lodged.

General Observations:
The seedbed was quite dry when planting, and
emergence was very uneven. Notes taken from each plot indicated an average of
only 38% of the plots emerged from the first flush. Adequate rainfall to
germinate the remaining seeds did not fall until the third week of June. After
this time stands from the entire plot were good but there were big differences
in growth stages. These differences were not as evident at harvest. Because of
the uneven development, notes on flowering and maturity were not taken.
