Durum cultivar response to fungicide application for the control of Fusarium head blight and leaf disease, 2003.

 

The experiment was conducted at the Langdon Research Extension Center, Langdon. �Lebsock, Munich, and Rugby� durum cultivars were planted with an Almaco double disk drill to a site previously cropped small grains. Soil type was a Svea loam. Plots were 7 rows wide 16 ft long in a randomized compete block design arranged as a 3 x 5 factorial. Treatments and applicable Feekes growth stage at time of fungicide applications were Folicur (10.51), Bayer experimental fungicide JAU 6476 (10.51), JAU 6476 followed by JAU 6476 (10.51 + 8 days), JAU 6476 followed by Folicur (10.51 + 8 days) and untreated. Wheat grains colonized by F. graminearum were hand broadcast on 20 Jun on individual plots at 3.5 oz per plot to increase chance of infection to Fusarium head blight. Spray solutions were applied by CO2 backpack sprayer at 18.4 GPA at 40 psi with XR8001 nozzles on a double swivel adapter angled 30� downward and oriented to spray forward and backward. Single applications of fungicides Folicur (tebuconazole) and JAU 6476 (prothioconazole) were applied to plots on 10 Jul at 6:00 a.m. Fungicide application rates were Folicur at 4 fl oz/A and JAU 6476 at 5.7 fl oz/A. Both fungicides were mixed with Induce adjuvant at 0.125% v/v. The sequential application was applied on 18 Jul at 7:00 a.m.Recommended production practices for Northeast North Dakota, NDSU Extension, were followed. The trial was harvested with a Hege plot combine on 19 Aug.Grain samples were cleaned and processed for yield, test weight, and DON (deoxynivalenol) determination. Data was analyzed with the general linear model (GLM) in SAS. Least significant differences were used to compare means at the 5% probability level.

 

Munich cultivar had significantly smaller test weight than Lebsock and Rugby. No other cultivar differences were detected. Sequential fungicide applications reduced leaf disease over the untreated. All fungicide applications significantly increased yield over the untreated but no differences were measured among fungicides. No differences in test weights were measured among fungicides but fungicide application increased test weight over the untreated. All the fungicides reduced DON levels compared to the untreated. DON levels were smaller with treatments that included JAU 6476 fungicide. Fusarium head blight field severities on the untreated plots were Lebsock 6.1%, Munich 5.2%, and Rugby 3.2%. All the fungicide applications reduced Fusarium head blight field severities on treated plots to <1% so ratings were not recorded.
