Grand Forks County 2003 Barley Variety Trials

2003 Trial Information: The 2003 trial was planted on May 1st into good moisture. There was still frost in the ground, causing the south west end of the plot to become wet. Subsequent rains caused slow emergence and lower plant stands on the west half of the plot. The west half of the plot had Folicur applied at the 4oz rate when all the wheat varieties had headed and many varieties were flowering. Disease pressure was moderate to moderately heavy with Bacterial Blight, Septoria, Leaf Rust and Scab. Due to poor stands and harvest problems the data was from the first wheat replication was not used. All three replications were used for the barley data. There was light to moderate lodging. All yields were adjusted to 13% moisture.

BARLEY: Following is the data from the 2003 barley plots. The bolded columns are the data from the fungicided plots. Due to very wet conditions the stands were light and yields varied accordingly. All barley varieties were headed when the Folicur was applied. Even though the stands were light, the quality differences between the fungicided and non-fungicided plots were substantial. The plumpness of the fungicides averaged 9.5% points higher and the test weights were higher and the protein was lower. Please note that with the application of a fungicide, maturity was delayed and moisture contents were higher.
