HERBICIDE UPDATE VI

ND Minor Use Program:

On Tuesday February 17, 2004 the ND Pesticide Harmonization Board approved using Minor Use Funds to fund 14 IR-4 pesticide registration projects where North Dakota is the requesting state and also has participated in the conduct of the research.

The reason these projects have been delayed is because of lack of resources and/or funding of IR-4 to complete the preparation and submission of these packages to EPA for

full federal registration. There are 14 projects which fit this category. With financial support, IR-4 can prepare registration packages for submission to the EPA.

All residue and analytical studies have been completed. Only the data and information needs to be prepared for submission to EPA for the eventual registration of these projects. These projects are as follows:

The board also approved funding for flumioxazin for dry bean desiccation project. Residue trials will be conducted this summer and IR-4 will prepare the package and submit to EPA after residue analysis has been completed.

Canadian Minor Use Program:

In 2002, Health Canada and Ag Canada announced an initiative to support minor use pesticide registration. $7.3 million was established in 2002 and another 54.5 million was marked for the next 6 years. Some herbicide initiative are: Valor on potato and bulb vegetables, Everest on leafy vegetables, Spartan on chickpea and strawberry, Command on peppers, cucurbit vegetables, and Balance Pro on buckwheat.
