EXPERIMENTS WITH CORN

Experiments with corn at the Dickinson Experiment Station in 1955 included a corn silage production trial of twenty two hybrids and open pollinated varieties, a corn grain production trial of ten entries and a rate of planting trial with both a hybrid and an open pollinated variety.

CORN SILAGE PRODUCTION TRIAL

Yields from the corn silage production trial are given in Table 13, as well as a summary of the average yields from this trial for the past two years.

CORN GRAIN PRODUCTION TRIAL

Yields from this years corn grain production trial are summarized in Table 14. Yields were poor throughout the trial mainly because of lack of sufficient rain in July and August. Grain yields suffered more than silage yields did, but neither were as good as has been harvested in several recent years.

RATE OF PLANTING TRIAL

Data from the 1955 rate of planting trial and the average yields for 1954 and 1955 are given in Table 15.

The rate of planting trial was begun in 1954 to determine the proper planting rates for this crop for highest production of both silage and grain. Because of the droughty July and August yields were poor from this trial and variations were rather wide between treatments. The trial will be continued for several years and progress reports following the completion of the third years trial will be made.
