INTRODUCTION

The 1955 harvest marked the completion of 49 years of continuous agronomic investigations at the Dickinson Experiment Station.

Agronomy work in 1955 included: continuation of many of the rotation and tillage trials begun in 1907 on the Main field and in 1927 on Field "N"; continuation of the rotation and tillage trials revised in 1954; trials to determine the effect of commercial fertilizers upon soil moisture utilization by grain crops; continuation of small grain varietal trials which this year included 16 hard red spring wheat varieties, 6 durum varieties, 17 oat varieties, 13 barley varieties, 12 varieties of flax, 6 varieties of winter rye and 3 winter wheat varieties; a corn hybrid and variety trial of 20 entries; a corn grain production trial of 10 entries; a rate of planting trial with corn, and, small scale nursery trials with new strains and selections of winter wheat, spring wheat, oats, barley and flax.

Plans are being made to change several trials on Field "N" beginning in 1956. These trials have been conducted for 30 years, and have adequately answered the questions which prompted their initiation. New lines of investigation will be begun on these plots next year.
