ABSTRACT OF RESEARCH IN AGRONOMIC INVESTIGATIONS - 1953

ROTATION AND TILLAGE TRIALS - 1953
Yields were good for all major grain crops in the Rotation and Tillage experiments conducted at the Dickinson Experiment Station, with corn being the most outstanding crop this year. Small grain yields followed rather closely the pattern of the 45-year average. Yields on plots green manured in 1952 were exceptionally good, which is usually the case in years when seasonal rainfall is abundant. Stem rust race 15-B caused some damage to wheat and oat stem rust caused some damage to oat plots, but because of early seeding the damage was considerably less than that which occurred in later plantings.
FERTILIZER TRIALS - 1953
Two trials in cooperation with the Soils Department, North Dakota Agricultural College, were run to determine effects of phosphating small grain upon the moisture content of the soil profile.
Both trials are being summarized by the Soils Department, North Dakota Agricultural College.
ROUGHAGE TRIAL - 1953
This year sorghum and sudan grass made their best growth and showing since the trial was begun, but a good year for sorghum and sudan is also a good corn year. Corn remains the top silage crop for this area both in quantity production and quality of feed.
BARLEY TRIALS - 1953
Experiments with barley at Dickinson included: field plot trials, the Great Plains Barley Nursery and the Station Barley Nursery.
Top yielders in the field plots were: Titan, Dix 45-435, B-103, Manchuria and Dix 45-15.
Top yielders in the Great Plains Nursery were Vantage, Custer, Otis, Wyoming WS 4-68 and Titan, and best in the Station Nursery were three Kindred x Titan selections Trebi and Rex.
The year was very favorable for good barley yields in this area.
CORN TRIALS - 1953
Record yields of both silage and grain were harvested this year. Average silage yields were approximately 6 tons and grain yields ranged up to 60 bushels per acre. Rainbow flint, northern strain remains one of the best yielders here.
FLAX TRIALS - 1953
Flax yields were poor this year, with yields suffering from thin stands and heavy weed growth. Top yielders were Lindas, Sheyenne, Bison, B 5128 and Deoro (C.I. 977).
OAT TRIALS - 1953
Oat experiments at Dickinson this year included field plot trials, the North Central Uniform Nursery and the Station Nursery.
Yields were high in the field plot trials at Dickinson this year with top yields being produced by Clinton x Marion C.I. 5440, Marion, Fortune, Overland, Andrew and Cody. Oat stem rust race 8 badly damaged all susceptible varieties.
Top yielders in the North Central States Uniform Nursery were: C.I. 5441, C.I. 5636, Simcoe, Rodney and Sauk.
Tops in the Station Nursery were Aberdeen No's. 2439, 2435, 2438, C.I. 5636 and Cody. Nursery yields ranged from 60 to 100 bushels per acre.
WINTER WHEAT TRIALS - 1953
Trials with winter wheat at the Dickinson Station for the 1952-1953 season included the Uniform Hard Winter Wheat Winter Hardiness Nursery with nineteen entries, and the Supplementary Winter Hardiness Nursery which included one hundred and forty-three varieties, strains, and selections.
The average percentage of survival of the entries in the Uniform Winter Hardiness Nursery varied from a high of 39% to a low of 13%.
In the Supplementary Winter Hardiness Nursery, survival percentages ranged from a high of 25% to a low of 0 survival.
HARD SPRING WHEAT TRIALS - 1593
Stem rust race 15-B took a heavy toll of both yield and test weight in all wheat trials at Dickinson this year. Durum's were damaged the most with Nugget producing only 6.2 bushels per acre of 48.5 pound grain. Ld. 356 showed some promise, averaging 17.5 bushels of 58.0 pound grain. Canada's C.T. 186 (McMurchy - Exchange x Redman3) was most outstanding of all wheats at Dickinson this year, yielding 28.2 bushels per acre of 58.0 pound wheat in the field plots as compared to Mida's yield of 15.1 bushels per acre of 53.5 pound grain.
Date of seeding made a noticeable difference in yield this year with earlier seedings having a decided advantage over late planting.
Bunt infection was comparatively light in the Uniform Bunt Nursery here with infections ranging from zero to 24%.
