ROUGHAGE TRIALS - 1953

The roughage trial, begun at the Dickinson Experiment Station in 1951, is designed to compare the relative values of several crops when grown for roughage under dryland conditions.

Table 7 - Yield Summary - Roughage Trials - 1951-1953
Crop Variety Average Pounds Green Weight Per Acre 3 Yr. Ave. Green Wt. 1951-1953 Relative Yield %
1951 1952 1953
Corn Northern
  Rainbow Flint 13025 3218 18706 11650 100
  Southern
  Rainbow Flint --- --- 20727 --- ---
  Nodak 301 13575 3658 15651 10961 94
Sorghum Rancher 6100 2498 13630 7409 64
  Black Amber 5950 3180 14711 7947 68
Sudangrass Sweet --- 2295 11515 --- ---
  Piper ---   8836 --- ---

This year sorghum and sudan grass made their best growth and showing since the trial was begun, but it seems that a year that is good for sorghum and sudan grass is also a good corn year. Corn remains the top silage crop for this area both in quantity production and quality of feed.
