FLAX TRIALS - 1953

Experiments with flax in 1953 at the Dickinson Experiment Station included field plot trials of fifteen named varieties.

Flax Variety Trials

The five top yielding flax varieties this year were Linda, Sheyenne, Bison, B 5128, and Dooro (C.I. 977).

Yields were poor in the flax variety trials this year, 7.3 bushels per acre being high from Linda and 2.4 bushels per acre being the lowest yield in this trial from Arrow.

Thin stands and a heavy weed infestation, particularly pigeon grass, were the main reasons for the poor yields this year.

Data from the 1953 flax variety trial are presented in table 15. Comparative yields for the flax variety trials from 1944 through 1953 with averages since 1944 are summarized in table 16.
