SPRING WHEAT SMUT NURSERIES

Uniform Bunt Nursery: 52 varieties or strains - duplicate eight foot rows

This nursery, which contains current uniform plot varieties, wheats from the Uniform Regional Spring Wheat Nursery, promising strains from other nurseries and several checks is seeded at five stations in the spring wheat region. Composite results are not yet available. Infection in the Dickinson trials in 1952 ranged from zero to 45 percent infected. Entries which carried no smut in this trial included Rival, R.L. 2624 (McMurachy - Exchange x Redman3), N. No. 2233 (Henry x Cadet ), N. No. 2170 (Pilot2 x Thatcher), II-44-35 (Pilot x K 58), II-45-28 (K 58 x Mida - Newthatch), N. No. 1691 (Reliance - 1018 x Mercury), N. No. 2105 (N. No. 1691 x N. No. 1756), N. No. 1831 (Mida x Cadet), L.D. 357 and L.D. 358, both from the combination L.D. 308 x Nugget. The highest infection in the Dickinson trial was recorded on II-44-31 (Frontana x Thatcher) which averaged 45 percent infected.
