SPRING WHEAT NURSERIES

Uniform Regional Nursery:

26 varieties or strains - triplicate 3 row plots grown at 18 stations in the spring wheat region.

The composite report for this trial is not yet available.

In the Dickinson trial the Thatcher check ranked eleventh for yield averaging 16.1 bushels per acre. Entries which exceeded the check included:

Two selections from Minnesota's Timstein x Thatcher cross which ranked seventh and tenth.

Two selections from Dr. L.R. Waldron's Am10 x Newthatch cross which ranked fifth and ninth.

N. No. 2239 from the cross Henry x Cadet and also N. No. 2300 from the cross Henry x Cadet. N. No. 2170 from the cross Pilot2 x Thatcher which ranked first with an average yield of 21.3 bushels per acre.

N. No. 2256 from the cross 1750 x 1753, which also averaged 21.3 bushels per acre and P.W. 114 from the cross Rushmore2 x Supresa.

Test weights were good in this trial ranging from a low of 58.0 pounds per bushel to a high of 63.0 pounds per bushel.

Three of the 26 entries, all from Dr. L.R. Waldron's Am10 x Newthatch cross, showed no sign of leaf rust infection in the Dickinson trial this year. None of the entries in this trial were completely free from black stem rust this year, although there was considerable difference in the degree of infection.

Results of quality trials on the 1952 Uniform Regional Spring Wheat Nursery will not be available in time to be included in this report.

Data from the field trials are summarized in table 33.
