Walking into the Dickinson Research Extension Center grounds, visitors are greeted with paths flowing from one bed of flowers to another.

“There’s no place like it in southwestern North Dakota,” said horticulturalist Marcus Lewton. “My vision is that eventually when you’re in the middle, you won’t be able to see anywhere except the grounds — it’s like an island, with shrubs planted on the east and south side and trees to the north and west.”

Lewton works summers for the Extension Service, while his full-time job is director of the Roughrider Area Career and Tec Center. He owned and operated a landscape and tree company in the Twin Cites until his wife, Lisa, was called as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church.

“I’m known here as Pastor Lisa’s husband,” he joked.

A native of Dickinson, Lewton took on the job as part-time horticulturalist in December. The grounds were completed with walking paths last summer, but his role was to fill the beds with flowers.
